The Invasion Ends!!
One of my new favorite shows this season was ABC's 'Invasion'. Set in a Florida Everglades community, Invasion follows two families coping with strange and dangerous events following a fateful hurricane. An invasive new species (which may or may not be alien) has begun killing and cloning the locals, and only a select few know about it and are willing to do something to stop it...
The show starred William Fichtner (Crash, Go, Armageddon), Eddie Cibrian (Third Watch) and Canadian Kari Matchett (Blue Murder). There was a great supporting cast and some really good child actors as well. The show worked on many levels as a family drama, 'X-Files' type alien show and your basic small town whodunit. The concept was unique and the setting something new, I think the only problem was the lack of 'stand alone' episodes.
New viewers would most certainly have had trouble following the main story arc of the show. And loyal fans since the pilot could not miss a single episode otherwise they'd be 'Lost' (to name another show).
Modern TV dramas with a heavy 'mythos' really need to allow for 'stand alone' episodes (episodes that do not move the main story arc along, but are self contained stories). These allow new fans to catch an episode and enjoy it, and then slowly learn the main arc storyline in further episodes. Shows like 'X-Files', 'Smallville' & 'Lost' are heavy on the story arc but also contain great stand alone stories that fans can enjoy. In fact I've heard some fans enjoy these stand alones more than the arc episodes.
What sucks about 'Invsasion' being cancelled is that it had great potential to become an amazing story to tell, now we will never know WHO the invaders were...alien or new species..or even worse? We shall never know now..the Invasion has ended.
